Designing a kids’s bedroom can be overwhelming. There’s so much inspiration on the internet that it can be difficult to choose where to start. The best place to start designing the perfect space for your child is by considering the following factors that will help improve the function and feel of their bedroom:

Flooring

Starting from the ground up, let’s discuss flooring. The type of flooring you choose will impact the overall look and feel of a room.

Hardwood, Hybrid, or LVP flooring are all great choices for kids. Depending on what is in the rest of your home, you will want to lean toward the same material or make sure it blends well. Solid and engineered are both strong enough and are usually able to be refinished. They are also a good environmental choice and work well with area rugs to make kids rooms warm and inviting. Not only are they used for flooring, solid and engineered planks are now used on walls and ceilings for decorative purposes. Even herringbone patterns are used in children’s and babies rooms.

Hybrid and LVP flooring are scratch resistant which is an added bonus for kids. LVP goes even further with being waterproof which has its perks in a setting where liquids are often a problem. Carpeting is great for warmth, however, kids with allergies don’t do so well with it. Tile is another choice but many parents feel it is too cold and the surface too hard for a bedroom.

Walls

Inspiration can come from just about anything or any era, and in many colors and forms. Painting is a cost-effective way of transformation, with just about any imaginable shade or even chalkboard paint that can be used as an art wall to draw on. Think of walls as an open palette that can be covered in pretty wallpaper, a personalized corkboard, fun art or a unique mural. Even a rock wall can be created with not too much effort. The possibilities are endless.

Lighting

Experiment with lighting to find the perfect fit. Either a fun pendant, down-to-earth wall fixtures, quirky lamps or bright nightlights all work. A kids room needs plenty of light and accent lighting is always a plus for those nighttime scaries.

Consider installing a motion sensor lights, these lights will automatically go on, illuminating the room and chasing away any darkness that might arise.

Organization and storage

Staying flexible when it comes to furniture and storage is a must. Baskets, bins and boxes that can be pulled out or hidden easily are great. Shelving and modular storage that intermix are perfect for navigating through transitional years. Installing decorative hooks help to keep more things off the floor, especially if they are placed at kid level. If you are working with space restrictions, consider a murphy bed or bunk beds. There are lots of options for smaller chairs or even floor pillows that don’t take up as much space as a side chair, making the room look bigger and having more room for your child’s many other treasures.
