Finding the Perfect Furniture for your Flooring
by Victoria Jackson
When creating a room from scratch experts say it’s best to start from the floor upwards. Once the style beneath your feet has been decided on, you can set to work on choosing colours for the walls, complementing accessories and, of course, furniture.
One of the biggest investments when decorating, choosing furniture can be a daunting task, especially when you’re unsure of how your personal style will come together. There are no right and wrong answers when it comes to decorating your home, and over on my interior design and lifestyle blog, I cover a plethora of different styles, what works and what perhaps doesn’t.
In terms of my personal style, flooring is a huge consideration, with timeless oak floorboards running throughout my home. To add color and comfort, I’m a huge fan of layering rugs, from faux fur to Persian designs. Today I wanted to share four ways you can style different flooring options, taking a look at furniture designs which work the best with each type of floor.
Parquet
Parquet is one of the biggest flooring trends of the year, especially in the world of Pinterest. It’s reminiscent of luxe Parisian apartments, with floor to ceiling windows and beautiful draped fabrics. Opulence is the key word when pairing furniture with parquet – think ornate detailed armchairs with rich textures such as velvet and jacquard, alongside one-off statement pieces like French roll top beds and Louis XIV ghost chairs.
Walnut
There’s a real mid-century modern feel that comes with deep walnut flooring, but that doesn’t mean your weekends should be spent at vintage markets searching for hidden treasures. Growing in popularity, many brands are now offering mid-century inspired pieces of furniture, with uncluttered and sleek lines – think a pared-back sideboard, or angular Eames-inspired dining chairs. You could even go as far as hunting for a 1960’s vintage telephone chair for your hallway, with mustards and oranges working well with dark walnut floors.
White Oak
With a open and fresh appeal, white oak flooring is perfect for pared-back, minimalist interiors. Reflecting the natural light, this is a great choice to make a room appear larger in size. An oversized corner sofa in grey or a neutral tone would work perfectly, alongside a faux fur rug and a hairpin leg coffee table. This style is all about simplicity so keep detail to the minimum but work with textures, brass and copper finishes.
Rustic
Rustic oak is probably one of the most popular choices when it comes to flooring. Suitable for both country cottages and modern townhouses, oak in its natural form is one of the most versatile flooring options. When it comes to styling a room with oak, think worn leather Chesterfields and open fires, country style dining chairs and rustic benches. Feature floral and tartan fabrics for added homely appeal.
